Stopped in for Sunday brunch with no expectations. A first glance at the menu revealed a broad selection- Greek/Mediterranean, American, and breakfast. I ordered the Gyro omelette, which came with feta, tomatoes, and "gyro meat." It was delicious, the feta was bold and the meat savory. The service was fast and friendly, coffee was refilled at halfway mark and food came quickly. This chain needs to narrow down the menu, but, overall a good diner for brunch. Food: A- Service: A Atmosphere: B

I have been here multiple times over the past month or so being that it's close to my job and I usually like to stop and get lunch before a long day at work. The food has been great each time I've been here. Filling and we'll prepared. The service is great and attentive. The one negative is how extensive the menu is making it very difficult to choose from one thing to the next. However it is nice to always try something new.

I've only been here once, but it was a very pleasant experience. The staff was very friendly, it wasn't too busy on a late sunday morning, (no lines) and while the food wasn't as good as homemade, it was quite good, with adequate portions. The price was the biggest bonus, as a full breakfast was under $10 even with a decent tip.

We had been here before and enjoyed our meal but this time was different. The food was somewhat greasy. At least two people in our party of five had indigestion after the meal. Service was very slow although the server was helpful.

Good food, no make that great food. Nice friendly family atmosphere. A lot of good choice on the menu if you need a big meal or a simple snack I'm sure your will find something, and I know it will be good.

I don't know what the other reviewers on here are talking about. Red olive is the best thing that has ever came to Grand Rapids. I really think the people who complain are overly critical and have nothing better to do than complain. THIS IS AN AMAZING DINER. That's right. It's a diner. No alcohol, laid back, amazing food, and amazing customer service. Everyone who works there is eager to know you or get you what you need. My husband and I are regulars and since we began going there WE LOVE IT. They remember us everytime. Plus they offer coupons! COUPONS PEOPLE! What other restaurants has amazing food& coupons?? Their menu is sure to satisfy and picky eater. It has something for EVERYONE. I love variety & that's what makes this restaurant different. They cater to everyone! I would never want them to change! It seems like no other restaurants have such a wide good variety like red olive. I was stunned! Applebee's has had the same damn menu items since I was a kid. Whenever I go I NEVER feel satisfied. I feel like I paid a huge price for and over rated dish with barely any food! -At red olive you get an amazing price & they don't back down on the quality & quantity of their food! It's really really good. You can't fake good food! It's either good or bad & it's amazing! I have not had one complaint & I have had several menu items. Red olive is a good place to sit down and have a nice meal. Don't expect to be wowed, but expect to eat good! Isn't that why your going in the first place?

Red olive is a Greek diner- this is a very all- American genre of restaurant that I have seen many times all over the U.S., so I was a little confused to see all the reviews about this place "not knowing what it wants to be" and such. It's a Greek diner! My wife had an omelette that was tasty but not remarkable; served with raisin toast that was soggy because it was excessively buttered. My sister had the chicken strips which were pretty awesome, although they didn't have barbecue sauce which I thought was odd. I had the gyro which was solid enough, with tasty cucumber sauce, but a little bit clunky with very thickly sliced gyro meat and only a few tomatoes - no other veggies. The Greek salad was very good. We didn't have an issue with service and the bill was very reasonable; $27 for all three of us!

  • Peter M.

Had to give it one star because that's the only way I can write this review. My parents came in prior to my visit and said I might like it. I took a look at the menu and it looked like a Leo's Coney or for Grand Rapidians a Grand Coney menu. So I wanted to try it. They came with my son and I and once again they had to send there meals back. The waitress was alone as was the cook. She managed to handle herself however I believe the cook couldn't have cared less. It was really just BAD. I wish I had something positive to say, wait, I do! Omelettes are 4.95 before a certain time! That is a good deal. However after this experience I'd be hard pressed to give this place another go. My parents couldn't be forced in there again. A new restaurant that is already cutting corners. Literally. See picture of the kids menu.

Visit this restaurant for the first time yesterday, it has comfortable seating, spacious dining area. For starters I had a cup of Egg lemon rice soup. My main entree was the Greek salad with lamb meat which I found to be very tasty. My husband ordered an egg beaters sausage, egg and cheese omelette with an english muffin. To our surprise they charged us an extra .25 cents for the English muffin, questioned it at checkout and waitress said that was automatically an extra charge in the system! No other restaurant in town charges extra for an English muffin! Found that to be kind of petty! If we go back I am thinking of asking waitress ahead of time if there are going to be extra charges added to the bill. She failed to tell us about the added charges to our bill when we placed the order!

The Waffle House of Greek food, minus the ambiance. In case you're curious this isn't an Italian restaurant, it's Greek, and Italian, and American, with breakfast. This place is trying too hard to be too many things, focus on just one food type and do it well. Food- I ordered corned beef hash and eggs with wheat toast (because that's Greek right?) the corned beef was from a can, toast was soggy, eggs were okay with a lot of franks red hot (which seemed to be watered down) Ambiance- non existent, what were your interior decorators thinking? You're trying to be Italian with the trellises, but it's ruined with the fluorescent lighting and big screen TV's showing CNN & Al Jazeera (because showing Al Jazeera America makes you middle eastern right?) Service- also non existent, I didn't even get my butt in my seat before the waitress was pushing for my order & drink. She came by twice through the whole meal and didn't ask me how I was, and we had to take our checks for payment versus them handling it. Shut off the fluorescent lights, get rid of the TV's and focus on one food type.

  • Michael S.

I walked in, and was confused. All the decorative lighting and the fluorescent lights where on. Why?? The atmosphere is basically a crappy Chinese restaurant, how ever its a Greek, American, diner with bad service. I always enjoy full service and cash register at the door. :/ #sarcasm The food was sub par and I can get better in my hometown of 1,200 people. The specialty roasted pistachio cake tastes like any white cake from Sam's Club. Why did I spend $5.00?? In conclusion, I have no idea what this restaurant is trying to be. Other than one that sucks at everything and will never get my business again And aljezera was on the TV's. Second... Why where there TV's??

Stopped here for breakfast on Wednesday (3-15-15). The breakfast special is very good. Two eggs, meat (bacon or sausage), hash browns, and toast. ALL for less than FIVE bucks. Our server, Linssey, was very attentive, friendly, and considerate of our needs. I would recommend asking for her and stopping here at your first opportunity. Great place.

  • Zach M.

Ate here for the first time today and got "The Best" Gyro with fries. The service was great, the staff was friendly and quick and the food tasted delicious. The house sauce for the gyro was the highlight, it just adds so much more flavor to the already very flavorful gyro meat. I will definitely be eating here again.

  • Coryn R.

My experience at Red Olive was interesting. We didn't get any help from a server for at least 10 minutes. There was a lot on the menu but I found the variation of food strange. Not really sure what type of vibe they were going for. I ordered the strawberry salad and the chicken on it tasted like it should have been on a gyro, not a fruity salad. Atmosphere was hectic and unorganized.

    (1)
  • James W.

The food wasn't bad... But the service was not good. They weren't rude, just not trained. You could tell the waitress was new... To waitressing. But it seemed like a lot of the staff was not very helpful. Probably won't be back.

I had a TERRIBLE experience here! Now let me preface this. I went there today with my boyfriend. We've both worked food service-- in fact, my boyfriend still does. And we're both very understanding customers. I've never written a review like this before. I made a yelp account JUST to write this review. So we waited 15 minutes or so before anyone came to our table. When we voiced our concerns to the front of house, our waitress finally came over, and was very sweet and apologetic. We thought okay, not a HUGE deal, maybe the food will make up for it. NOT SO MUCH. First bad sign: the menu is huge! Like, way too big! It feels like they can't decide between salads, gyros, or having a total diner style menu! (And for a brand new place, the decor is outdated by 15 years at least- but that's beside the point.) My boyfriend ordered a reuben, I ordered an egg sandwich with cheese. We understand that the specialty is probably more in salads and gyros. (???) But still! These are hard items to mess up! And they did! The corned beef on the reuben was fried and shredded??? Who in the entire history of reubens has ever done this? The meat came out BROWN. It tasted awful! Just leave it in deli slices! As for my egg sandwich, the kitchen forgot the cheese, and the egg was not seasoned, salted, nothing. Totally flat. It became EDIBLE once I seasoned it myself. That's more than I can say for the reuben. We sent the reuben back, split my egg sandwich, and left hungry. Our waitress talked to the manager and they removed the Reuben from the bill. I was surprised he didn't come to the table to ask us about our experience. He didn't look especially busy. EXTREMELY unprofessional. I have NEVER had a more miserable dining experience. This was the absolute worst. If I could give it 0 stars, I would.

OK, so this place isn't for foodies. No Medjool dates stuffed with locally sourced goat cheese. But my bacon and feta omelette was tasty and perfectly cooked. My husband's pancakes looked and tasted home-made. Our waitress was friendly and attractive. The decor was bland, but clean and well tended. Restroom was spotless. Looks like a great place for a quick and simple breakfast.

We visited again a few days ago. Had the delicious gyros plate again and it was perfectly prepared. My husband had the reuben sandwich and he loved it. Thin sliced moist corned beef on rye with thousand island dressing. Our son had the coney dogs and he really liked them with great Detroit style chili. We also had the saganaki again and this time it was perfectly prepared.

  • Stephanie P.

The service was not very good and the food was just plain awful. Everything tasted old and bland, and you could tell many items were microwaved or reheated in a microwave. This was a disgrace to true Greek food. We definitely will not be back!

If you are looking for a casual place to take kids, this is it! We are from the east side, so we are always on the lookout for a Coney Island type place. This is it!! The menu is large, so be ready to look a while. I had the Chicken Gyro and greek salad combo- it was great! My oldest son had a coney dog and the other a gyro, my husband had a large greek salad. We all were very happy with our meals and the bill was reasonable. I was not a fan of the lemon rice soup..it was too thick for my taste. The service was great, our waitress was very nice. The owner was there and happened to hear us talking about the excitement of a coney place and stopped to chat with us for quite a while. Its not fancy, not hipster, just good and casual.

Was craving a Gyro so decided to check out Red Olive with the family this weekend. Mostly Mediterranean food but has quite an extensive menu from pasta, to chili dog, to liver and onions! Has a breakfast menu as well. Started with the Sampler Platter of hummus, tzatziki, and veggie grapes leaves. Loved the hummus and will definitely get again. Grape leaves are mini, but the most flavorful I've ever had. Bland yogurt sauce but really good tzatziki (like the thickness that's simar to sour cream) which I added to my gyro. Gyro was good, not the best I've ever had, but it fulfilled my craving. Want to go back and try other foods on the menu. Kids mac & cheese is like Kraft, but a good portion. Chocolate milk was made with syrup, my daughter wasn't a fan. The flaming goat cheese Opa(?) was popular and fun to watch. Service was okay. We were there during prime time lunch hour. Overall I would rate 3.5 for a menu with a variety and some gems if food (based on the little we tried so far). A nice option for a family restaurant. I look forward to going back and trying more stuff.

Very happy to have a "Detroit-style" diner here in GR offering Greek food. Highly recommend the spinach pie. We also had the gyros (lamb-beef) dinner which was okay, but I've had better in GR (GitaPita). My husband liked the lemon-rice soup. Dinner salad was huge -- Romaine and head lettuce were fresh and included a generous slice of cucumber and thick slice of tomato -- but the lettuce was very wet -- get a salad spinner please. I'd go back and try some of the other Greek dishes and maybe a Coney Island.

Gyro Omelette. Excellent service, clean and friendly place and the food was very tasty, big portioned and 20% less than Anna's House.

Only had breakfast so that's all I can speak on. It was good, cooked well and had nice portions relative to the price. Not a five star place, but makes no claims to be. Just decent food at a an affordable price.

Nothing fancy just a small restaurant with decent food. Prices are ok gyros might be the best thing on the menu. I saw a lot of them come out. The chicken and the lamb/beef gyros were good. only downside was the desserts they are store bought.

With a menu that includes Greek entrees, Coney Dogs , all-day breakfasts, steak and seafood, and everything in between, there is something for everyone at this casual family dining spot. I found the restaurant clean and tidy when I visited on a busy Saturday afternoon. Their menu is massive and it took a while to look over it all. Thankfully our server kept the coffee topped off while I hemmed and hawed over what to get. Once I found out that Red Olive is a popular East Side restaurant chain, it made sense why Coney Dogs and Greek food were next to each other; I feel like both are big in Detroit. In between ordering my goat cheese avocado salad and it's arrival, my table 'oohed and aahed' as several people ordered the Saganaki, a flaming cheese plate served with pita bread. It was quite a show! My salad arrived and proved to be just as big as the menu. While not as show-stopping as the Saganaki, it was tasty and filling. I liked the big chucks of goat cheese on it- no little slivers of cheese here! Even though ranch wouldn't have been my first choice as a dressing for this salad, I liked the taste of it together. Next time I have a hankering for a taste of the East Side, I know where to go!

Jasmine was an awesome, friendly server. I had the Cobb salad and made additions and substitutions and it was perfect! (And huge!) My husband had a gyro that was delicious with a fabulous homemade yogurt sauce. The menu has a huge variety of items from breakfast to Greek, salads, hot dogs, wraps and more! We will definitely be back!

The food wasn't bad... But the service was not good. They weren't rude, just not trained. You could tell the waitress was new... To waitressing. But it seemed like a lot of the staff was not very helpful. Probably won't be back.

Only had breakfast so that's all I can speak on. It was good, cooked well and had nice portions relative to the price. Not a five star place, but makes no claims to be. Just decent food at a an affordable price.
